(National) Insurance (Company) Building

Iraq
2015-2016

The Iraqi National Insurance Company Building is located in the center of the city of Mosul. The 50-year-old, 7-floor building designed by noted architect al-Jadirji was used by ISIS militants to carry out executions, including throwing victims from top of the building, time and time again. Each time it did so, they video-documented the appalling executions and circulated the videos on its various media channels.  Established for the purpose of securing and insuring the lives and property of people in the Nineveh governorate, the Insurance Building was now used by members of the ISIS organisation to kill the youth in the city.

The building suffered extensive damage due to the bombardment by the international coalition during the military operations to liberate the city which ISIS used as a platform for sniping people and carrying out executions as well as securing a hideout for its militants.

The ISIS organisation adopted brutal approaches and mechanisms to murder those who violated its rules and used unprecedented, gruesome methods to spread terror and fear among the population groups. In doing so, the organisation aimed at to boost its survival and enforce its control through spreading fear and terror.

Recently, the government completely demolished the building despite calls by activists to maintain it as evidence to the crimes of the extremist organisation ISIS.
